ทางหลวงแผ่นดินสายสุขุมวิท เดิมคือถนนสายกรุงเทพฯ - สมุทรปราการ ต่อมา พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๐ รัฐบาลได้ก�าหนดให้เป็นเส้นทาง
ตามแผนแม่บทเชื่อมโยงไปสู่ภาคตะวันออก จึงได้มีการขยายเส้นทางออกไปสู่จังหวัดฉะเชิงเทรา ชลบุรี ระยอง จันทบุรี และตราด
ในพ.ศ. ๒๔๙๓ รัฐบาลได้ขนานนามทางหลวงสายนี้ว่า “ถนนสุขุมวิท”

Sukhumwit Road, the National Highway, was originally Bangkok - Samut Prakan Road. In 1937 the government
issued a master plan designating it as the main artery to the Eastern Region, so it was extended to the provinces of
Chachoengsao, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. In 1950 it was named Sukhumwit Road.
